So you’re hanging in LA for a holiday and your out at a bar, one of the last things your going to realise is all the bars close at 2pm! Now if your a tourist you probably wont have the after party contacts so the closest place to get your next drink is Vegas!

Realistically if you have the “lets go to Las Vegas” moment at 2pm then it probably isn’t worth your while, since the credit crisis not as many flight leave for Vegas from LA, in the past there was basically one leaving every half hour almost! last time I had a “lets go to Vegas” moment I couldn’t even find a flight at 2pm but I did find tacos so that was that!

I have however been sitting in a bar in LA at 8pm by myself and thought “this is going to be a great night and I don’t think I will want it to end at 2pm!” Now it is completely possible to be drunk in an LA bar at 8pm and then be in a Vegas club by 10pm!

This is how I did it!…

I thought the whole “I’m going to Vegas so I can keep partying after 2pm” was the best forward planning I had ever had! so walked out side got into the first cab and said “LAX please!”

LAX was only 15 minutes away but that gave me plenty of time to call up the main airlines and find a flight, South West Airlines we’re great and I basically walked straight in bought a ticket at the counter for $150 (if you pre book a few weeks in advance you can get them for $50) then pretty much got on a plane!

The person on the flight next to me was a very anxious flyer, so I saw it as my duty to take their mind off things in the only way a drunk Aussie knows how, be overly boisterous and try and include everyone on the plane in the conversation that you think you are having with the person next to you… It seemed to work and I got a free drink from the hostess as it was fathers day and I said I was a father … South West we’re the best firkin airline now I think of it as not only did I get a photo with the pilots but I also got a photo of me and ALL the people on the plane… “group photo!”

Ok Back on track Simon! So lets skip forward, from Vegas airport just jump in a cab, I got a limo to myself for $45 to the strip which is about the same as a cab (this was a weekend though) You can get a hotel room for under $100 per night during the week, I’ve seen it as low as $60 at a four star hotel.

Once your at a hotel just sit down and gamble very very slowly, this way you loose very little money but get free drinks :) Then just take it from there!

There are some cool clubs in Vegas so just ask around and see where your night takes you, if you have never been before just buy a yard class and walking the strip, things will happen from there!

How did my night end? Well I bought new shoes, ran out of money and freaked my Aussie bank manager out with a drunk phone call saying I was in Vegas and my card was broken and to fix it, then got blisters due to my new shoes and couldn’t walk, spent my last $20 on tequila that made me very sick so fell into bed, rolled over to see the time was 2pm… I couldn’t help but think how good my night would have been if I stayed in LA… I did get new shoes out of it though!

I’ve been to Vegas a heap but the only way to do it is a spur of the moment trip… deep down though I’m an LA kind of guy

So how much does it cost for accommodation in LA?
Well I stay in the Venice Beach, Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica area whenever I go there so I’ll be talking about that area.

There are some short stay apartments available in the Venice Beach, Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica area for about $110 US per night. Hotels range in price depending on what you want, if you budget $120 per night you will be able to find a half decent hotel and the more you spend the better it gets, any cheaper however seems to start getting pretty bad!

I have done holiday homes before in Venice Beach and price to quality ratio didn’t really justify the extra effort in renting one, you are still paying close to hotel prices but without the amenities, if you have a couple of thousand to spend a week then thats a different matter with you being able to get a good pad! But basically they know your a tourist and what you are paying at a hotel so there isn’t all that much to save, I’ve even been disappointed in the quality before. A good trick is to find a holiday home website that lists all the properties available and then email a heap of them with an offer, I’ve saved around 40% in the past doing that.

This next trip I am looking at renting a furnished apartment on a month by month basis, prices at the moment are at around $1600-$1700 for a one bedroom and the complex has all the amenities like pool, gym etc. Doing it this way brings the cost down to about $55 per night and you also save by being able to shop at local grocery stores and cooking good home cooked meals instead of eating out every night! You do need to rent it for a month though so it is only good if you are going to be staying for a prolonged holiday.

In short;

  • If you are staying for only a week or two on a budget then find a short stay apartment, there are a few around and it will cost you about $110 US per night for a studio apartment.
  • If you have a budget of $2000+ per week or are traveling with a group then holiday apartments on Venice Beach are a great option over the hotels, you’ll be waking up in an iconic area in a penthouse! it can’t get much better than that!
  • If your staying in LA for a month or more then get an apartment on a monthly lease you’ll be able to get a one bedroom for under $2000 per month easily and that will be in a complex with a pool, gym etc! If you just want a studio then they are even cheaper, you’d be able to get one for under $1500, I have seen studio apartments going for less than $1000 per month, they really were not anything flash but much better then a backpackers and you have your own space.

So I thought it was time that the Simon Camp site had some useful information on here and seeming I am off to Los Angeles for an extended stay I figured blogging about the cost of an extended stay in Los Angeles whilst I am over there would be a good idea!

So lets start with the LA airline ticket cost!
I live on the west coast of Australia so flying to the west coast of the USA is probably one of the longest routes, with that in mind any LA flight ticket cost I talk about will almost certainly be cheaper for anyone else!
At the moment the cheapest ticket to LA for me is $1,594, I have done this route a few times before and the cheapest I picked up a ticket for was about $1,100 return all up!

This time around I got two economy tickets on Air New Zealand for $3,006 return so $1,503 each which isn’t that bad… I also paid another $1,100 to upgrade to Air New Zealand’s Skycouch, basically if your buying two seats then you can buy the third seat next to you and they upgrade you to a special seat that converts your three seats into a day bed type thing…

Now if you are buying the seat beware! when booking online you tick the box that appears to be the price to buy the Skycouch option but its not, what you are doing is buying the option to buy the seat! then you need to call Air New Zealand up and buy the extra seat so it does cost you almost the price of another fair! So I do feel scammed about that one! Its just lucky Air New Zealand serves the best economy meals on any airline!

So to wrap it up Air New Zealand was the cheapest for me, basically I got a Skycouch for the two of us for the same price as everyone else was charging for a standard fare to LA

P.S. If you are going to be travelling by plane internally in the United States then book the tickets yourself via the airlines own website, it will save you a packet and is super easy these days! South West Airlines is by far the best followed by Virgin America!

Well I seem to be doing alright so far! I was on page two the other week but now I seem to be motoring along and have spot number 4 and 5! Now I just need to some how become more relevant than the other 3 Simon Camp’s… or is it Simon Camps’… I think its Simon Camp’s… anyway I just need to become more relevant than the other three Simon Camp pages above me and I’ll be at number 1 woohoo!
